The Northampton Conservation Commission has initiated an important project aimed at enhancing bicycle and pedestrian safety along Route 5, with plans to extend the Manhand Veil Trail into East Hampton. This project, discussed during the June 12, 2025, meeting, seeks to create a shared-use path that will connect existing trails and improve accessibility for all users.
The proposed path will run along the west side of Route 5, starting from the Manhand Veil Trail and extending north to the I-91 interchange. Key features of the project include resurfacing existing pathways, repainting road lines, and replacing a culvert to accommodate the new bike path. The design aims to address current safety concerns, as the area lacks adequate bicycle accommodations and sidewalks, making it difficult for cyclists and pedestrians to navigate safely.

Additionally, plans include creating organized parking at the Manhand Rail Trail trailhead and incorporating a bus stop to facilitate access to the trail.
The meeting featured a presentation by engineers from Chapel Engineering, who outlined the project's goals and design elements. They emphasized the importance of community feedback and expressed a commitment to addressing any concerns raised by residents.
As the project moves forward, the Conservation Commission aims to finalize plans and gather additional input from the community in upcoming meetings. This initiative represents a significant step towards enhancing transportation infrastructure in Northampton, promoting safer and more accessible routes for cyclists and pedestrians alike.
