El Paso County moves forward on 75-mile Paso De Norte Trail project

El Paso County is making strides in promoting healthy living through its ambitious linear park program, which aims to create a 75-mile trail connecting the community from the New Mexico border to Hudspeth County. Commissioner David Stout highlighted the importance of this initiative during the El Paso County Commissioners Court meeting on June 16, 2025, emphasizing that the trail is just a small part of a larger vision for the county.

The Paso De Norte Trail, which broke ground in 2018, is designed to encourage outdoor activities and foster community connections. Stout noted that the open sections of the trail are being methodically linked, providing tranquil pathways that enhance neighborhood accessibility. "The more opportunities that people have, I think, the healthier our community is gonna be," he stated, underscoring the project's potential impact on public health.

In addition to the trail discussions, Parks and Recreation Director Tim Fulton addressed concerns about the maintenance of local golf courses and sports fields. He introduced new golf course superintendent Brad Weiss, who is focused on improving the condition of the greens and fairways while managing water usage effectively. Fulton also reported a significant increase in youth sports participation, with summer league teams expected to grow from 150 to 250, highlighting the community's enthusiasm for outdoor activities.

As the county continues to develop its recreational infrastructure, the emphasis on health and community engagement remains a top priority, promising a more connected and active El Paso County in the years to come.
