The Wake County Board of Commissioners convened on June 16, 2025, to discuss the schematic design for the upcoming Lake Myra County Park, marking a significant addition to the county's park system. The meeting featured presentations from key project team members, including Eric Staley, senior facilities project manager, and representatives from Susan Hatchell Landscape Architecture and SA Architects.
Staley opened the discussion by providing an overview of the park's location and its importance. Situated in the eastern part of Wake County, Lake Myra County Park will span over 300 acres and is strategically placed between Turnipseed and Robertson Mill Nature Preserves. This area currently lacks county parks, highlighting the necessity for this development, which was identified in a previous comprehensive parks master plan. The land for the park was acquired in 2007, and its design and construction were included in the 2018 parks bond.

Over 300 community members participated in three in-person meetings, contributing more than 8,200 responses through surveys. This input helped shape the park's core values, which include experiencing nature, promoting connectivity, and balancing built and natural systems.
The first phase of the park's development will focus on various recreational amenities, including picnic shelters, restrooms, a playground, a park center, and facilities for boating and fishing. A significant feature will be a boardwalk bridge connecting the eastern and western parcels of the park, enhancing accessibility and promoting outdoor activities.
Architectural considerations for the park center and other facilities include sustainable design strategies such as solar energy, geothermal systems, and rainwater harvesting. The buildings will be constructed with materials that reflect the natural surroundings and will be designed to be accessible to all visitors.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to continue engaging the community as the project progresses, ensuring that Lake Myra County Park meets the needs and expectations of Wake County residents. The next steps will involve finalizing the schematic design and moving towards construction, with the aim of creating a vibrant space for recreation and education in the heart of the county.
