The City Council of Lebanon, Indiana, is set to witness the realization of a long-discussed project: the new sensory garden, thanks to a recent grant approval. During a meeting on June 17, 2025, Pam Verbarg, Executive Director of the Arc of Greater Boone County, expressed her excitement about the project finally moving forward after years of planning and fundraising challenges.
The sensory garden, which aims to provide an inclusive space for community members, has been a topic of discussion for over a decade. Verbarg noted that previous attempts to launch the project had stalled at the fundraising stage. However, the recent opportunity presented by the 1 80 in Color grant from the Economic Development Corporation (EDC) has reignited momentum. "It is truly happening now," Verbarg stated, highlighting the enthusiasm surrounding the project.
The anticipated completion date for the sensory garden is September 30, 2025. Verbarg mentioned that the design team is currently finalizing arrangements for site preparations, with planting expected to begin shortly thereafter. This timeline marks a significant acceleration compared to the years of delays previously experienced.
The sensory garden will be open to everyone, and Verbarg emphasized the excitement among the Arc community about the benefits it will bring. Additionally, the Action Club, a group of self-advocates who meet regularly, has expressed a desire to contribute to the project by providing benches and other amenities, further enhancing the garden's accessibility and enjoyment for all visitors.
As the project moves forward, the community looks forward to the positive impact the sensory garden will have, fostering inclusivity and providing a space for relaxation and engagement for years to come.
