Young County Humane Society requests funding increase to enhance animal shelter services

Young County Commissioners Court has taken a significant step towards enhancing animal welfare in the community by considering a request from the Young County Humane Society to double its funding from $20,000 to $40,000. This request, presented during the court's meeting on June 17, 2025, marks the first increase in funding since 2008, reflecting the rising operational costs faced by the shelter.

Jennifer Spencer, secretary of the Humane Society board, along with shelter director Shelby Brogdon, outlined the critical services provided by the organization, including spaying and neutering over 2,000 animals since 2018 and offering low-cost veterinary services to residents. The shelter has seen a steady increase in animal intake, with 118 animals brought in during 2024 and 51 already this year. Spencer emphasized the shelter's role in public safety by managing stray populations and providing medical care for sick or injured animals.

The Humane Society's financial challenges were highlighted, as rising costs for supplies and veterinary care have outpaced donations. Spencer noted that while product donations have increased, the overall financial strain has hindered the shelter's ability to expand services and maintain operations effectively.

In response to inquiries about the shelter's capacity and past issues with animal intake, Spencer clarified that while the shelter strives to accommodate all animals, there have been instances where capacity constraints limited their ability to accept additional animals. The court members expressed their support for the Humane Society's mission and discussed the importance of ensuring adequate funding to sustain its operations.

The court's decision on the funding request is expected to have a lasting impact on the shelter's ability to serve the community and manage the welfare of animals in Young County.
