The United Nations and its partners are intensifying efforts to provide humanitarian support in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, where conditions continue to deteriorate. During a recent briefing, officials reported that approximately 200,000 meals were delivered through community kitchens last week. However, the situation remains dire as prices for essential goods soar, with a 25-kilogram bag of flour in Gaza City selling for 1,600 shekels, equivalent to $450.
The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) emphasized the urgent need for life-saving aid to reach those in need, adhering to humanitarian principles. Critical shortages of fuel have been reported, impacting essential services such as water supply. Diesel supplies in southern Gaza are nearly depleted, and attempts to coordinate fuel deliveries from Rafa have been repeatedly denied by Israeli authorities. OCHA warned that humanitarian, communication, and banking activities could cease unless fuel supplies are restored or access to existing stocks is granted.
Despite these challenges, the UN has managed to send over 50 truckloads of supplies to the Kerim Shalom crossing, although heavy restrictions remain on the types and quantities of aid allowed. The ongoing displacement of individuals has exacerbated shelter needs, with a ban on the entry of shelter materials persisting for over 100 days.
In addition to the situation in Palestine, the briefing addressed humanitarian crises in Sudan, where ongoing conflict has led to significant displacement. Recent reports indicate that over 12,000 people have fled their homes in the Darfur and Kordofan regions due to violence and economic instability. OCHA reiterated the need for unfettered humanitarian access to assist those affected.
The briefing also touched on the situation in Ukraine, where recent attacks have resulted in civilian casualties and damage to humanitarian aid facilities. Efforts are underway to provide emergency support to affected populations, including food and shelter.
As the international community grapples with these pressing issues, the UN Secretary-General continues to advocate for a negotiated two-state solution in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, calling for an immediate ceasefire and the unconditional release of hostages. The urgency of humanitarian action is underscored by a recent report projecting a rise in acute food insecurity in several countries, including Palestine, Sudan, and South Sudan, highlighting the need for coordinated international efforts to address these crises.
