The Village of Orland Park has officially designated the week of June 2025 as National Grasslands Week, recognizing the vital role of the Orland Grassland Land and Water Reserve. This proclamation, read by Trustee Lawrence in the absence of Mayor James Dodd, highlights the significance of the 1,000-acre site, which serves as an important habitat for over 240 bird species and various plants of concern.

The Orland Grassland, designated as an Important Bird Area (IBA) by Audubon, is noted for its restoration efforts that have improved its natural hydrology, addressing local flooding issues. The site features a 5.5-mile multipurpose trail and four natural terrain footpaths, providing residents with opportunities for outdoor activities such as walking, biking, and running.

Pat Hayes, the volunteer site steward, presented at the meeting, expressing gratitude for the village's support and detailing the extensive volunteer efforts that contribute to the grassland's restoration. Local volunteers, including members of the Carl Sandburg Interact Club, Girl Scouts, and church groups, dedicate approximately 5,000 hours annually to various activities, including habitat restoration and education.

This proclamation not only celebrates the ecological importance of the Orland Grassland but also emphasizes the community's commitment to environmental stewardship. The village's recognition of National Grasslands Week aims to raise awareness and encourage further participation in conservation efforts, ensuring the preservation of this valuable natural resource for future generations.
