Residents of Martin County can look forward to significant improvements in traffic flow and safety following the recent Metropolitan Planning Organization meeting held on June 16, 2025. Key discussions centered around the proposed roundabout at the Trace Bell intersection, which aims to enhance access for local communities while addressing public safety concerns.
During the meeting, officials reported on a public hearing that attracted approximately 135 attendees in person and an additional 59 online participants. The hearing provided a platform for community members to voice their opinions, resulting in 20 verbal comments and 29 written submissions. The primary concerns raised included the feasibility of installing a traffic signal instead of a roundabout, maintaining wide pavement at the intersection, and the dimensions of a shared-use path.

Subscribe for Free Experts clarified that a traffic signal is not warranted due to anticipated traffic volumes, and the roundabout is designed to improve safety by reducing conflict points and significantly lowering the risk of accidents. The roundabout is expected to decrease fatalities by 90% and severe injuries by 75%, while also increasing traffic capacity by 30 to 50%. Additionally, it will operate effectively during power outages, eliminating the need for police direction.
Concerns regarding the shared-use path were also addressed, with officials confirming that the proposed 12-foot width is essential for accommodating both bicycles and pedestrians safely. The design phase will consider community feedback, including potential adjustments to the entrance features of the Montego Cove community to enhance traffic flow and safety.
The study for these improvements is set to be completed by fall 2025, with the design phase already funded for the fiscal year. However, construction funding has not yet been secured. As the project progresses, community members will be kept informed, ensuring their voices continue to shape the development of these critical infrastructure enhancements.
