Planning Commission approves McDonald's drive-thru project near high school

The Midlothian Planning and Zoning Commission convened on June 17, 2025, to discuss several key agenda items, primarily focusing on a proposed drive-thru restaurant. The meeting began with staff presenting their recommendation for the approval of a Site Plan (SCP) for the restaurant, which includes signage on four elevations.

During the discussion, a commissioner sought clarification regarding the property to the west, identified as single-family residential. Staff confirmed that this area, marked in yellow on the map, is located north of 1387 Walnut Grove and is not currently for sale as commercial property. The property owner has engaged in Development Review Committee (DRC) meetings to explore various commercial uses for the site.

Further inquiries were made about the entrance to the proposed restaurant, which staff estimated to be approximately 300 feet north of Highway 1387. After addressing these questions, the applicant, Danielle Carter, a third-party entitlements consultant for McDonald's, introduced herself to the commission and offered to answer any questions.

Following the public hearing, a motion was made to close the session, which was seconded and unanimously approved. The commission then moved to discuss the approval of the site plan as presented. A motion to approve was made and seconded, resulting in a unanimous vote of 7-0 in favor of the proposal.

With no additional items on the agenda, the meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn, which was also seconded and passed. The commission's swift approval of the drive-thru restaurant marks a significant step in the development of commercial services in Midlothian.
