Bantry North residents urge Dallas Board to revoke poker club's certificate of occupancy

The Dallas Board of Adjustments meeting on June 17, 2025, spotlighted the contentious issue of poker clubs in the city, particularly focusing on the Texas Card House and its legal standing. Tom Dupree, vice president of the Bantry North Homeowners Association, urged the panel to deny the application for a certificate of occupancy for Contenders Dallas LLC, citing a previous ruling that allowed Texas Card House to remain operational despite ongoing legal challenges.

Dupree emphasized that the only change since the original ruling was the city of Dallas's evolving stance on poker clubs, which he argued should not affect the panel's decision. He pointed out that a ruling from Judge Moyer declared poker illegal, and several legal opinions from prominent figures, including former Texas Attorney Generals, supported this view. Dupree insisted that until a definitive ruling from a court is made, the panel should uphold the current legal framework and deny the application.

Kevin Menzing, another resident and HOA board member, echoed these sentiments, stressing that the city’s revocation of the certificate was in line with Texas law. He expressed concerns that allowing Contenders Dallas to operate under the guise of a restaurant could undermine future zoning laws related to gambling.

Matthew Love, a new resident, added a personal perspective, highlighting safety concerns for families living near potential gambling establishments. He argued that such businesses should not be located close to residential areas, schools, or churches, fearing increased crime and disturbances.

The discussions reflect a growing tension in Dallas regarding the legality and placement of poker clubs, with residents advocating for stricter adherence to existing laws to ensure community safety and compliance.
