Residents urge Massachusetts Legislature to halt Pilgrim's wastewater evaporation practices

During a recent meeting of the Joint Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, significant concerns were raised regarding the ongoing evaporation of contaminated wastewater at the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station. Testimonies from community members highlighted the potential environmental risks associated with this practice, particularly its impact on Cape Cod, a designated ocean sanctuary.

One resident emphasized the urgency of halting the evaporation process, warning that if it continues, approximately 100,000 gallons of contaminated water could be released into the air each year. This water could fall on homes, beaches, and agricultural land, posing serious health and environmental risks. The resident urged the legislature to enact legislation to permanently stop this practice, citing strong local support for such measures.

James Lampert, a former nuclear safety expert and current member of the Commonwealth's nuclear decommissioning panel, echoed these concerns but expressed reservations about the current legislative proposal, known as H 40 40. He argued that the bill does not adequately address the broader issue of contaminated water stored in various parts of the facility, not just the spent fuel pool. Lampert called for immediate action to prevent further evaporation, criticizing the bill's limited scope and timeline.

The discussions underscored a growing demand for legislative action to protect the environment and public health from the potential dangers of radioactive wastewater.
