Glenham Elementary celebrates retirement of educator Tom Hoyle after 30 years of service

During the Beacon City School District Board of Education meeting on June 17, 2025, a heartfelt tribute was paid to Tom Hoyle, a dedicated educator at Glenham Elementary School, who is set to retire after an impressive 30-year career. His contributions to the school and the district have left a lasting impact on students and the community.

Hoyle has spent the majority of his career teaching fifth grade, where he has been recognized for his commitment to fostering creativity and curiosity among his students. His innovative teaching methods included launching an intramural program and a unique initiative called Flight Club, where students engaged in hands-on learning by building paper airplanes, hot air balloons, and rockets. These experiences not only sparked students' imaginations but also provided them with memorable educational opportunities.

In addition to his classroom achievements, Hoyle organized numerous field trips, including visits to the Newburgh Air Force Base and Dutchess County Airport, allowing students to explore real aircraft and learn about aviation firsthand. His annual rocket launches at the fifth-grade picnic have become a cherished tradition at Glenham.

Hoyle's influence extended beyond academics; he also dedicated 16 seasons to coaching various tennis teams within the district. His dual role as an educator and coach has helped countless students grow both academically and athletically.

The meeting highlighted Hoyle's extensive contributions, including organizing over 30 trips to Sharp Reservation and other educational excursions that brought history and science to life for students. His efforts have provided students with unique experiences, such as whale watching and exploring historical sites.

As he prepares for retirement, Hoyle plans to spend a year exploring Spain but has expressed his intention to return to Glenham as a substitute teacher. His legacy of dedication and passion for education will undoubtedly be missed by students, colleagues, and the community.
