Lyft Bikes and Scooters secures funding for bike share system improvement

Boston's bike share program is set to receive a significant boost, with $2 million earmarked annually from federal transportation funding through the Community Connections Grama Program. This funding is crucial for maintaining the aging equipment and ensuring the program's state of good repair. City officials expressed optimism about the reliability of this funding source, despite concerns about potential future risks.

During a recent Planning, Development & Transportation meeting, discussions highlighted the importance of this financial support as the city navigates the challenges of aging infrastructure. The bike share system, operated by Lyft Bikes and Scooters, is a key player in Boston's transportation landscape. Lyft, which acquired Motivate—the original operator—continues to dominate the bike share market in North America.

In addition to the federal funding, city officials are actively working on a grant-funded project through a U.S. Department of Transportation discretionary grant. This project is on track, with an agreement already in place, and aims to complete all work by the summer of 2029. The city is focused on adhering to the project schedule, which includes developing plans and engaging the community.
