Montgomery County celebrates Juneteenth with week-long events and strong civil rights commitment

Montgomery County, MD, is gearing up for a week-long celebration of Juneteenth, marking a significant commitment to honoring the historical event that symbolizes African American freedom. During a recent council session, Council Vice President Gabe Albornoz and Council Member Will Jawando emphasized the importance of this celebration, especially in a climate where many regions are scaling back their recognition of Juneteenth.

"Montgomery County is not rolling back our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion," Jawando stated, highlighting the county's dedication to expanding its Juneteenth events. This year, the county will host a series of activities, culminating in a major celebration at BlackRock Center for the Arts on Saturday.

The council members reflected on the historical significance of Juneteenth, which commemorates the arrival of Union troops in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, to announce the end of slavery. Jawando noted that while the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863, many enslaved individuals remained unaware of their freedom for years. "No one is free until we all are free," he asserted, reinforcing the ongoing struggle for equality.

Council Member Sales echoed these sentiments, urging residents to recognize that the fight for justice continues. "Juneteenth is not just a historic milestone; it's a reminder of our resilience," she said, calling for community engagement in dismantling systemic racism.

The council also recognized the contributions of local leaders and organizations in promoting Juneteenth, with a proclamation celebrating the day and its significance. The proclamation was presented by Council President Kate Stewart, marking a collective commitment to acknowledging the full history of the United States and its impact on society.
