Fire Chief highlights urgent need for vehicle replacement amid funding challenges

Fire Chief representatives expressed that the current fleet is aging, with some vehicles over 10 years old and in need of replacement. For instance, a vehicle previously used by the duty chief has been repurposed as a medical response vehicle after requiring a new engine. The chief noted that while some vehicles have been reliable, they are now showing signs of corrosion and wear, indicating that they have surpassed their service life.

The urgency of the request for new vehicles was underscored by the chief's comments on the potential impact on emergency response capabilities. The council discussed the possibility of acquiring a utility truck that is currently available downtown, which could expedite the process of updating the fleet. However, the chief cautioned that even with allocation, the purchase process and necessary upfitting could still take time, potentially delaying delivery until 2026.

Additionally, the council addressed the issue of insurance recovery from a totaled vehicle, which amounted to approximately $25,000. Questions arose regarding why these funds were not included in the current proposal for new vehicles, with some council members suggesting that recovered funds should contribute to the purchase of replacements.
