Great Neck students made a significant impact on their community during the inaugural Senior Serve Day on May 29, 2025, as nearly every graduating senior participated in a hands-on community service event. This initiative, conceived by Dr. Holt Smith, aimed to provide students with a meaningful way to give back to the community that has supported them throughout their educational journey.
The event was the culmination of years of planning and collaboration among teachers, parents, and local organizations. Key contributors, including parents Jordana Levine and Nerus Nafisi, played vital roles in coordinating logistics and connecting students with various service opportunities. The goal was clear: to have Great Neck students work within their own community, leaving a positive mark on the schools, parks, and institutions that shaped their formative years.

They engaged in various projects, from beautifying local parks to assisting at schools and charitable organizations. The day began with a motivational address from Mr. DePaola, who emphasized the importance of service and active citizenship. Each student received a Senior Serve t-shirt, fostering a sense of unity and pride among participants.
Despite facing challenging weather conditions, the enthusiasm of the students remained undeterred. Feedback from local organizations and community partners has been overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the pride in what the students accomplished and the compassionate citizens they are becoming.
Senior Serve Day is envisioned as more than just a one-time event; it is hoped to become a cherished tradition at North High, bridging the gap between adolescence and adulthood. Students reflected on their experiences, sharing sentiments that underscored the meaningful connections made during the day. Many expressed a desire to continue volunteering, with some planning to assist at the Ronald McDonald House.
As the school year concludes, the success of Senior Serve Day stands as a testament to the values of service and community engagement instilled in Great Neck students, paving the way for future generations to follow in their footsteps.
