San Luis receives Arizona PEP Safety Award and opens Salvation Army satellite office

The City of San Luis held a special council meeting on June 18, 2025, where several significant topics were discussed, highlighting the city's achievements and community initiatives.

The meeting commenced with Mayor Nieves Bridal declaring proclamations for the city. A notable highlight was the recognition of San Luis for receiving the Industrial Commission of Arizona Small City PEP Safety Award. Maria Saburi, the city's risk manager, along with Yolanda Duenas, facility supervisor, presented the award, emphasizing the collective efforts of city employees in promoting workplace safety. Saburi noted that the award reflects the city's commitment to safety and proactive risk management, with injury rates significantly below the industry average. The award was presented during a ceremony on April 28, and the city celebrated this achievement with a video showcasing the dedication of its employees.

Following this, the finance department was recognized for excellence in financial reporting, receiving a certificate for the comprehensive annual financial report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2024. Acting City Manager Jenny Torres praised the finance team for their hard work and dedication, which contributed to this achievement.

The meeting also featured a presentation by the Salvation Army, led by Lieutenant Jonathan Herzog, who announced the establishment of a satellite office in San Luis. This initiative aims to address community needs by providing food assistance, utility support, and summer camp opportunities for local youth. Herzog expressed gratitude to Mayor Bridal for offering a rent-free space for three years, which has allowed the Salvation Army to begin operations in the city. He highlighted the immediate impact, noting that over 66 households received food assistance in the first week of service.

The meeting concluded with council members expressing their appreciation for the efforts of both the risk management and finance departments, as well as the Salvation Army's new presence in the community. The discussions underscored the city's commitment to safety, financial excellence, and community support, setting a positive tone for future initiatives.
