Humane Society urges unified animal shelter for Douglas County community

The Humane Society of Douglas County is urging city leaders to consider a unified animal shelter for the entire county, following news of significant financial support from two estates. During the recent Common Council meeting, representatives emphasized that a single facility would better serve the community and streamline resources, rather than maintaining separate shelters for the city and county.

Jean, a spokesperson for the Humane Society, highlighted the inefficiencies of operating two shelters, stating, "It seems ludicrous for residents to continue to support two shelters... when a combined effort would best serve the community." She argued that animal welfare advocates do not recognize municipal boundaries and are focused on helping homeless animals.

Tom Johnson, chairman of the Town of Lakeside, echoed these sentiments, urging the council to consider the needs of all Douglas County animals. He noted that many towns and villages are willing to contribute financially to a new shelter, with a proposal on the table that includes $20,000 from the county and an additional $10,500 from local municipalities.

Both speakers called for further discussions that include input from the entire county, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in addressing animal welfare. As the city moves forward with plans for a new shelter, the call for a consolidated facility reflects a growing consensus on the need for a more effective approach to animal care in the region.
