Planning Commission approves ASU's conditional use permit for radio astronomy antennas

This proposal includes the installation of 68 five-foot antennas and two relay towers on two parcels of land totaling over 5,000 acres near Meteor Crater. The antennas are intended for research purposes, specifically to study space weather and train students in astronomy.

Planning staff presented details about the project, emphasizing that the antennas would be located in a fenced area designed to minimize visual impact and blend with the natural environment. The commission noted that the project aligns with local zoning ordinances and would provide economic opportunities for the ranches involved. Additionally, outreach to nearby public agencies, including the Hopi Tribe and Navajo Nation, yielded no objections.

The commission found that the project met all necessary findings for approval and recommended it with specific conditions outlined in the staff report.
