Matt Bus proposes new North South transit route for West Fargo residents

The West Fargo City Commission convened on June 16, 2025, to discuss a proposed new transit route aimed at enhancing public transportation within the city. The initiative, presented by Matt Bus representatives, seeks to establish a North-South connection along Cheyenne Street, responding to community feedback gathered during the ongoing transit development plan.

Aaron Nelson, the director of planning and zoning, emphasized that the meeting's purpose was to introduce the concept rather than seek immediate approval. The proposed Route 21 would connect key locations, including downtown West Fargo, City Hall, and the Rust Ed Recreational Center, while also integrating with existing routes to improve overall connectivity.

Currently, West Fargo is served by two routes, 20 and 24, which operate on a limited schedule. The new route aims to address the growing demand for more frequent and accessible transit options, particularly for residents in the northern and southern parts of the city. The proposed service would run Monday through Saturday, with buses departing every hour.

During the discussion, commissioners raised questions about the financial implications of the new route, particularly regarding the projected increase in paratransit expenses and the overall budget for fixed-route services. Matt Bus representatives assured the commission that federal funding could offset some costs, making the new route financially viable.

The commission expressed interest in refining the proposal, including potential adjustments to Route 24 to avoid service duplication and better serve popular destinations like grocery stores. The feedback gathered during this meeting will inform the final transit development plan, expected to be completed by August 2025.

As West Fargo continues to grow, the proposed transit enhancements reflect a commitment to improving public transportation and meeting the needs of residents. The commission will consider further input before finalizing any decisions, with the possibility of including funding for the new route in the preliminary 2026 budget.
