Saint John's Ministries reports record shelter use and increased daytime services in community

Homelessness remains a pressing issue in Green Bay, as highlighted during the recent Protection & Policy Committee meeting. Representatives from Saint John's Ministries reported a record-breaking shelter season, with increased nightly occupancy, yet the bittersweet reality is that homelessness continues to rise in the community.

The emergency shelter season, which runs from November to April, saw a surge in demand, prompting concerns about the growing number of individuals without adequate shelter. "It's a community issue and it involves a community solution," stated a representative from Saint John's Ministries, emphasizing their commitment to working closely with city government to address these challenges.

Despite the record numbers, the shelter season was described as relatively calm, thanks to enhanced resources in leadership, security, and case management. However, the organization acknowledged that many individuals still find themselves on the streets, unable to access shelters due to capacity limits or eligibility requirements.

In response to the increasing visibility of homelessness, Saint John's Ministries has adapted its daytime resource center, Mica Center, and Wellspring, transitioning them into warming centers. This shift encourages individuals to seek refuge from the streets, even allowing them to rest and recharge. The result has been a remarkable 31% increase in visits to these daytime services over the past six months.

As the city grapples with the complexities of homelessness, the collaboration between community organizations and local government remains crucial. Saint John's Ministries is actively exploring additional options to support those in need, reinforcing their role as a vital partner in the ongoing fight against homelessness in Green Bay.
