Hanford City Council appoints Christopher Tavares as interim city manager

The City Council of Hanford convened on June 17, 2025, to address several key issues, including the appointment of an interim city manager and discussions on community safety and upcoming projects.

The council approved an employment agreement for Christopher Tavares, the city's finance director, to serve as the interim city manager starting in August. This decision comes as the current city manager, Mario Sifuentes, prepares to leave for a new position in Arizona. Tavares will receive a monthly salary of $16,809, which is a 5% increase from his previous pay, and will maintain his current benefits during his interim tenure. The council expressed confidence in Tavares's qualifications and ability to guide the city during the transition period until a permanent city manager is appointed.

In addition to the leadership change, the council discussed the ongoing development of a low barrier shelter navigation center, which is set to be built off Tenth Avenue and Hanford Motor Road. The council agreed to invite representatives from the Kings County Administrative Office (KCAO) to present updates on the project, including timelines and funding, at a future meeting.

Another topic of concern was the safety of electric bikes in the community. Council members raised issues regarding reckless riding and the need for enforceable codes to address these safety concerns. The police chief noted that while juveniles are required to wear helmets, adults are not mandated to do so. The council encouraged residents to report any dangerous riding incidents to the police for appropriate action.

The meeting concluded with announcements of upcoming events, including summer camps for children running from June 9 to August 8, highlighting the city's ongoing commitment to community engagement and safety.
