DeKalb residents share struggles over water debt and affordability at county meeting

Simone Greer, a new homeowner, recounted her ordeal of being charged for water despite having turned it off due to a burst pipe. "I have to buy water to flush the toilet," she explained, highlighting the lack of communication from the county regarding available assistance programs.

Gregory Jones, another resident, revealed his struggle with a disputed water bill of $62,000, which he claims is inaccurate. He expressed the urgency of his situation, as he cares for a son with special needs. "I’m walking in a dark tunnel, and I’m trying to see light at the end of this tunnel," he pleaded, calling for immediate action from county officials.

The meeting underscored the need for the implementation of the water affordability resolution passed earlier this year, which aims to alleviate the financial burden on residents. Advocates are pushing for the establishment of a neutral customer advocate office to help residents navigate their billing disputes more effectively.
