California Acupuncture Board clarifies graduation requirements for licensing exam

The California Acupuncture Licensing Committee has clarified essential graduation requirements for aspiring acupuncturists during its recent meeting on June 12, 2025. The committee emphasized that only graduates from accredited programs will be eligible to take the licensing exam, a decision aimed at ensuring public safety and maintaining high standards in acupuncture education.

During the meeting, concerns were raised about the confusion surrounding the accreditation status of certain acupuncture training programs. A speaker highlighted the necessity for clear standards, noting that without proper accreditation from the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine (ACAHM), students may not meet the qualifications needed for licensure. The committee responded by outlining a three-part approval process for acupuncture training programs, which includes accreditation from the Bureau of Private Postsecondary Education, regional accreditation, and approval from the California Acupuncture Board (CAB).

The CAB made it clear that simply completing a curriculum does not qualify a student for the licensing exam. Graduates must provide official transcripts that confirm their graduation status, which must be submitted in a sealed envelope directly from their educational institution.
