Franklin County to launch new 24-hour mental health crisis center by 2026

A groundbreaking 24-hour crisis center is set to transform mental health care in Franklin County, Ohio, as officials aim to alleviate the burden on hospital emergency rooms. The center, expected to be fully operational by early 2026, will provide urgent care specifically for mental health issues, a 23-hour observation hold, and longer-term care—all in one location. During a recent Columbus Metropolitan Club meeting, health leaders emphasized the urgent need for accessible mental health services. "This is going to take a huge burden off of our hospitals," one official stated, highlighting the center's role as a vital access point for residents seeking help.

A significant focus of the meeting was the newly released Franklin County Health Map, which underscores the impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on community health. Experts noted that addressing ACEs is crucial for preventing long-term mental health issues. "When we think about adverse childhood experiences, you can imagine something that happens to a child at a young age can lead to generations of issues in the future," one speaker remarked.

The upcoming ACEs summit, scheduled for July 21, aims to gather community leaders to discuss strategies for building resilience against these experiences. "How can we prevent ACEs? For those who have experienced a high ACE score, how can we provide protective resources?" another official asked, stressing the importance of community collaboration.
