Cass County approves banking partnership with Hawthorne Bank for streamlined accounts

In a recent meeting held on June 18, 2025, the Cass County Commission made several key decisions that will impact local governance and community services. Among the most significant was the approval of a new banking contract with Hawthorne Bank, which will serve as the depository for the Treasurer's Office and the Circuit Clerk's Office for the next four years. This decision, which passed unanimously, is expected to enhance efficiency and significantly increase interest earnings for the county's budget.

Chris Mullendover, presenting on behalf of the Treasurer's Office, highlighted that this is the first time in years that all county financial accounts will be consolidated under one bank. This move is anticipated to streamline operations and improve service delivery, particularly during peak cash deposit periods in November and December. The competitive bidding process included five banks, with Hawthorne Bank emerging as the best option due to its superior interest rates and local presence.

The Commission also approved a change order for the Cascade Road and Bridge project, which required adjustments to the bridge piles due to unforeseen conditions. This resolution, along with others concerning the Cass County Planning Board and the Sheriff's Office, reflects ongoing efforts to maintain and improve infrastructure and public safety in the county.

Additionally, the Sheriff's Office received approval for the purchase of essential IT equipment and portable communication radios, ensuring that law enforcement remains equipped with up-to-date technology for effective operations.

During the meeting, it was noted that the county collector made a significant deposit of $50,000 to the general revenue fund, further supporting the county's financial health.

As the meeting concluded, the Commission expressed condolences for the family of Commissioner Cheslick, who was absent due to a recent loss. The session ended with plans to enter an executive session, underscoring the ongoing commitment to addressing both public and internal matters effectively.
