Indio City Council evaluates new animal care services agreement with Riverside County

The City Council of Indio is poised to renew its partnership with Riverside County for animal care services, with a proposed agreement that could significantly increase costs over the next few years. During a recent meeting, council members discussed the impending expiration of the current contract, which has been in place since 2021 and is set to end this month.

The proposed agreement includes a substantial increase in funding for both shelter and field services. Indio's share of this increase is projected to be $351,841, bringing the total cost for shelter services to nearly $458,000 for the upcoming fiscal year.

Indio has three designated animal control officers, but there are questions about their availability and effectiveness, particularly during weekends. Reports indicate that the city averages about 56 weekend responses per month, raising doubts about whether the current staffing levels are sufficient to meet community needs.

The council is considering options to adjust the service model, including potentially reducing coverage to five days a week. However, members emphasized the importance of maintaining adequate animal control services, especially given the city's growing population and the associated increase in animal-related calls.

In light of the proposed budget increase, council members are seeking more detailed performance data from the county to justify the costs. They emphasized the need for regular updates on service effectiveness and responsiveness to community concerns. The council is also exploring the possibility of establishing its own animal control officers to enhance service delivery and potentially reduce costs.
