Kenai City Council prioritizes wildfire protection strategies around airport site

In a pivotal City Council meeting on June 19, 2025, the focus was on enhancing wildfire preparedness around Kenai's airport. Council members discussed a strategic land selection aimed at protecting critical infrastructure, particularly in the event of a major wildfire. The airport, deemed a top priority for protection, is crucial for deploying emergency resources during such crises.

The proposed plan emphasizes completing treatment around the east side of the airport, where previous efforts have already been made on the west and north sides. This initiative is expected to significantly reduce fire and smoke exposure, ensuring the airport's operational capacity remains intact during emergencies. The council highlighted the importance of maintaining access to air resources and personnel through the airport, especially in the face of potential wildfires impacting the Kenai area.

Council members also addressed the remaining funds for this project, with discussions on possibly expanding the scope of work to maximize the use of available resources. The total acreage for treatment was clarified, with Tract A covering 93.31 acres and an additional 35.04 acres in Tract B.

In addition to wildfire preparedness, the council adopted a resolution for a contract to provide dip net dumpsters and porta potties for the upcoming fiscal year, noting a slight increase in costs but within budgeted amounts.

Looking ahead, a special meeting was scheduled for June 30 to authorize binding city insurance, a necessary step due to changes in the public entity risk pool in Alaska. This meeting is expected to be brief and non-controversial, focusing solely on securing insurance coverage effective July 1.
