Franklin County honors Samuel Worley on his 100th birthday celebration

Franklin County Commissioners honored former county commissioner Samuel W. Worley during their recent meeting, celebrating his 100th birthday and recognizing his extensive contributions to the community. The citation highlighted Worley’s lifelong ties to Franklin County, where he was born on a family farm in 1921.

Worley’s distinguished military service as an Air Force intelligence officer during World War II, along with his educational achievements from institutions like Northwestern University, were acknowledged. His professional career included significant roles at Valley Bank and Trust Company, and he served multiple terms in local government, including as a borough council member and president in Chambersburg, as well as an eight-year tenure as a Franklin County commissioner.

The commissioners also noted Worley’s involvement in various community organizations, such as the YMCA, American Legion, and United Way, among others. His accolades include being named Citizen of the Year in 1980 and receiving the Lifetime Service Award from the Pennsylvania State Association of Boroughs.

The board expressed their sincere appreciation for Worley’s dedication and service, culminating in a unanimous motion to approve the citation. Following the formal recognition, Worley shared his gratitude, reflecting on the friendships and community ties he has built over the years.
