City recognizes Kathy Reese and Julie for over 40 years of public service

The City Commission of Herington held a meeting on June 17, 2025, where several key topics were discussed, including the recognition of retiring employees and updates from various city departments.

The meeting began with a heartfelt acknowledgment of Kathy Reese and Julie, two long-serving city employees who are retiring. The commission expressed gratitude for their combined 40 years of public service, highlighting their dedication and the challenges they faced in their roles. Both were presented with plaques in recognition of their contributions, and the commission wished them well in their future endeavors.

Following the recognition, the Fire Department provided updates on their activities for May. Chief reported a total of 55 calls, including medical emergencies, vehicle accidents, and animal rescues. Notably, the department responded to a transformer fire and assisted in rescuing a cat from a roof. The Chief also discussed ongoing efforts to improve fire service ratings by potentially placing a fire truck at the airport, which could enhance insurance ratings for local businesses.

In addition, the Code Enforcement Department reported on their activities, including the issuance of building permits and inspections. They condemned two houses due to unsafe living conditions and identified 26 hazardous structures throughout the town. The department is working on a plan to address these issues, prioritizing the most dangerous buildings.

The meeting concluded with discussions on the need for further budget considerations regarding fire department funding and the management of hazardous structures. The commission plans to continue these discussions in future meetings to ensure the safety and well-being of the community.
