BRC announces plans for supportive housing project in New York by 2030

On June 18, 2025, the Bronx Housing, Land Use, and Sanitation & Environmental Protection Committees convened to discuss a significant new supportive housing initiative aimed at addressing the pressing need for affordable housing in the community. The proposed development is set to provide 60% of its units as supportive housing, designed to foster stability and belonging for residents facing various challenges, including chronic health conditions and substance use disorders.

Supportive housing, as outlined in the meeting, is distinct from traditional shelters or transitional housing. It offers permanent, affordable living spaces equipped with on-site support services. These services include comprehensive healthcare, life skills coaching, and assistance in accessing critical benefits such as Medicaid and Social Security. The initiative emphasizes a holistic approach, aiming to help residents thrive and actively participate in community life.

The project will feature 24/7 on-site staff, including case managers and a clinical supervisor, ensuring that residents receive the necessary support to maintain their housing. Additionally, the development will create local job opportunities, both during construction and once the facility opens, with an estimated 30 to 60 full-time positions available. The organization behind the initiative plans to conduct local hiring outreach and job fairs to engage community members.

Community engagement is a cornerstone of this project. The developers expressed their commitment to working closely with the local community board and residents throughout the planning and construction phases. They aim to facilitate housing lottery workshops to assist community members, particularly older individuals who may struggle with technology, in applying for housing.

While the project is still in its early stages, with construction expected to be completed by the end of 2029, the developers are keen to maintain open lines of communication with the community. They plan to return with design renderings and further details as the project progresses.

The meeting highlighted the importance of supportive housing as a long-term solution to homelessness and housing insecurity in the Bronx. By integrating supportive services and fostering community involvement, this initiative aims not only to provide shelter but also to enhance the overall well-being of its residents and the surrounding community.
