Raymond Reyes discusses affordable housing and park improvements in Harlingen

He expressed interest in the city's Tax Increment Financing (TIF) program, which he believes could support similar developments in Harlingen. "Affordable housing is very important," Reyes stated, advocating for homes that are both cost-effective and resilient to severe weather.

Reyes also raised concerns about local veterinary services, noting the absence of a veterinarian on staff to assist with pet vaccinations. He urged city officials to consider solutions for this gap, especially as budget discussions approach in July.

Additionally, Reyes highlighted the recent heavy rainfall that caused localized flooding, stressing the importance of proactive measures to prepare for future weather events. "Mother nature's gonna really hit us because we're overdue," he warned, calling for serious attention to the city's infrastructure.

Following public comments, the commission moved through routine business, approving minutes from the previous meeting and a consent agenda that included two significant FAA grants totaling over $3.5 million for airport improvements. City Manager Gonzales announced an upcoming budget workshop scheduled for June 30, emphasizing the need for community input in financial planning.

The meeting also featured a presentation from the South Texas Emergency Care Foundation, which discussed the increased demand for emergency services during the summer months, particularly related to heat-related incidents.
