Charleston prepares for hurricane season with awareness expo at Lowe's

Hurricane preparedness took center stage at the James Island Town Council meeting on June 19, 2025, as officials announced an upcoming Hurricane Awareness Expo. Scheduled for Saturday, June 24, from 10 AM to 2 PM at Lowe's, the event will feature various booths, including one from the Charleston County, which will showcase a helicopter landing. Attendees can expect hot dogs and vital information to help them prepare for the hurricane season.

Council members expressed gratitude to Melissa and Stan for volunteering their Saturday to manage the town's booth at the expo. The meeting also included the appointment of Skyler Blair to the Board of Zoning Appeals, a decision that received unanimous support from the council.

In addition to the expo, the council discussed a future rezoning proposal for the Charleston Swim Academy property on Folly Road, which will be addressed in next month's planning commission meeting. The recent Board of Zoning Appeals meeting was highlighted as a success, particularly a case involving a daycare in the Honey Hill neighborhood that garnered strong community support.

The Environment and Beautification Committee announced a "Gorilla Cleanup" scheduled for July 12 at 8 AM, encouraging residents to participate in local cleanup efforts. The Neighborhood Council will host a meeting featuring guest speaker Eva Urbanik Hines, who will share her life story, marking 80 years since the end of World War II.
