Waco ISD honors students and community partners at recent school board meeting

The Waco Independent School District (Waco ISD) celebrated significant achievements and welcomed new leadership during its school board meeting on June 18, 2025. A highlight of the evening was the recognition of the Waco ISD Police Department, which received accreditation from the Texas Police Chiefs Association. This prestigious designation places Waco ISD among only eight school districts in Texas with accredited law enforcement agencies, underscoring the department's commitment to high standards in safety and security.

In addition to the police department's recognition, the board honored local media representatives for their contributions to public education reporting. The Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) media honor roll acknowledged journalists from various outlets, including KXXV and KCEN, for their fair and balanced coverage of Waco ISD throughout the school year.

The meeting also featured the presentation of the TASB Stand Up for Public Education award to the Family of Faith Worship Center. Under the leadership of Pastor Andrade, the organization has made significant contributions to the community, including providing Thanksgiving dinners and hygiene products to students in need.

In a move to strengthen community engagement, Waco ISD announced a partnership with the Waco Bridge, a new media organization focused on connecting residents with essential stories about education and local issues. This partnership aims to enhance communication and foster community involvement.

The board introduced Janice Whiting as the new principal of Dean Highland Elementary School. With over a decade of experience in education and a strong background in instructional leadership, Whiting expressed her excitement about returning to the school where she began her teaching career.

These developments reflect Waco ISD's ongoing commitment to enhancing educational experiences and community partnerships, setting a positive tone for the upcoming school year.
