Munro Woodbury High School celebrates top graduates Dorian Tomaris and Veronica Wolnicki

In a vibrant celebration of academic achievement and community spirit, the Monroe-Woodbury Board of Education gathered on June 18, 2025, to honor the remarkable accomplishments of local students. The evening was filled with applause and pride as the board recognized outstanding individuals from various high schools within the district.

Dorian Tomaris, the valedictorian of Monroe Woodbury High School, was celebrated for his exceptional academic journey. With plans to study humanities, arts, and social thought at College Berlin in Germany this fall, Dorian has also made his mark as a copy editor for the school newspaper, captain of the math team, and an active member of several honor societies. His dedication to academics and extracurricular activities has set a high standard for his peers.

Veronica Wolnicki, the class of 2025 valedictorian, was also in the spotlight. She will be attending Binghamton University to pursue a degree in mathematics. Her high school career has been characterized by strong leadership and commitment, as she has excelled in both academics and athletics, serving as a vital member of the varsity cross country and track teams, and taking on leadership roles in the National Honor Society.

The evening continued with the recognition of Amy Bell, who was named valedictorian for John A. Flannery High School. Amy plans to leverage her skills from the career and technical education program at Orange Ulster BOCES to pursue a career in baking, showcasing her talent in cake decorating. Her hard work earned her an academic achievement award, and she is set to attend culinary school after graduation.

Matthew McLaughlin, recognized as the Outstanding Student from Margaret A. Flood High School, was also honored for his artistic talents in digital design and graphic arts. He received a full scholarship to Orange County Community College, where he will focus on art history. Matthew's compassionate response to a community member in need earned him additional accolades, including the Sojourner Truth Award.

The event also highlighted the achievements of students participating in the Special Olympics, with Miss Karen Escobar leading the recognition of young athletes who have shown determination and spirit throughout the year.

As the evening concluded, the board expressed gratitude for the hard work and dedication of all students, leaving attendees with a sense of hope and inspiration for the future. The celebration not only recognized individual achievements but also reinforced the community's commitment to fostering educational excellence and support for its youth.
