Columbus Community Center addresses housing restrictions for non-drivers at local hub

The South Salt Lake Planning Commission meeting on June 19, 2025, focused on a significant application regarding housing restrictions at the Hub, a residential facility co-owned by the Columbus Community Center and the housing authority. Christie Chambers, CEO of the Columbus Community Center, explained that the restriction was initially put in place to comply with parking requirements. However, it limited the ability of many potential residents, particularly those in the center's autism program, to achieve independence by driving. Chambers emphasized that the policy was not only counterintuitive but also potentially violated fair housing standards by discriminating against non-drivers.

With the recent confirmation of adequate parking space, the commission discussed the possibility of removing the driver restriction, allowing all qualified individuals to reside in the Hub regardless of their driving status. Chambers assured the commission that rental rates would remain unchanged for both drivers and non-drivers.

The meeting also addressed parking concerns, with Chambers noting that additional parking is available at the nearby Meadowbrook Track Station, which is often underutilized. This assurance aimed to alleviate worries about future parking shortages.

As the meeting concluded, the commission expressed appreciation for the work done by the Columbus Community Center and indicated a willingness to support the proposed changes.
