Oakland Park City Commission proclaims July 1, 2025 as 90th birthday celebration

Under the warm glow of the city hall lights, the Oakland Park City Commission gathered to celebrate a significant milestone: the upcoming 90th birthday of the city. With a unanimous vote, the commissioners adopted a proclamation that honors the rich history and vibrant future of Oakland Park, a community that has evolved remarkably since its incorporation in 1925.

The proclamation highlights the city’s journey, beginning with its founding by Dewey Hawkins, who served as the first mayor and played a pivotal role in uniting the community. Today, Oakland Park spans over eight square miles and is home to more than 47,000 residents, who benefit from a variety of parks, recreational opportunities, and quality city services.

As the city looks forward to its centennial celebration, the commission reflected on recent achievements that underscore Oakland Park's commitment to progress. The opening of Fire Station 9 has enhanced emergency response capabilities, while the completion of a new public works complex has improved city operations and freed up land for future park development. Notable transformations, such as the revitalization of Dr. G. Woodson Park and the establishment of the Harlem McBride Community Garden, have created inviting spaces for residents to connect and enjoy nature.

Looking ahead, the city is set to complete the sky building on the West Side of Dixie Highway, which will house the new city hall and facilitate the redevelopment of six acres into residential and retail spaces. This initiative aims to support long-term economic sustainability and enhance community amenities, including a future commuter rail stop.
