Hayward town board tables decision on Way Pro LLC golf course permit amendment

The Sawyer County government meeting on June 21, 2025, focused on a proposed amendment to a conditional use permit (CUP) for a golf course facility, previously owned by James and Diane Clugniss. The new owners, Way Pro LLC, are seeking to amend CUP number 18-002 to allow up to eight tourist rooming house guests from their rental properties to access the golf course.

The original permit, granted in 2018, limited use of the golf course to the owners and their friends and family. The proposed changes would transfer the permit to Way Pro LLC and permit guests from up to eight rental properties to utilize the golf course facilities. Currently, Way Pro owns three rental properties but may acquire more in the future.

The facility features a three-hole golf course, a cart barn, and a clubhouse. If approved, guests would need to schedule their use of the golf course, maintaining it as a private facility. The amendment would also require approval from both the Town of Hayward and the Sawyer County zoning committee.

During the meeting, concerns were raised regarding the lack of public input, as no representatives from the town were present at prior meetings to discuss the proposal. Additionally, there were objections from local residents regarding potential traffic increases and the need for clarity on the properties involved. One resident emphasized the importance of listing specific rental properties rather than allowing a blanket approval for future acquisitions.

The committee acknowledged the objections and decided to table the decision, allowing for further discussion and consideration of community concerns. The next steps will involve addressing the objections raised and ensuring compliance with local regulations before any amendments to the conditional use permit are finalized.
