Fire Department partners with Truro Township to save $30K on new fleet vehicle

The City Council of Canal Winchester held a work session and public hearing on June 16, 2025, addressing several key topics, including fleet vehicle updates and preparations for upcoming community events.

The meeting began with a discussion on the recent acquisition of a new fleet vehicle, which was ordered in January 2022 and finally received. This vehicle, built on an F-550 chassis, mirrors the three existing trucks in service. The council highlighted a collaborative effort with Truro Township during the vehicle's design, which resulted in significant cost savings of nearly $30,000. This was achieved through shared plans and a prepayment discount. However, the council noted that current market conditions have changed, eliminating previous rebates and discounts, making future purchases more expensive.

Additionally, the council discussed plans for two more vehicles currently on order. One will be a standard purchase, while the other will involve rechassising an existing vehicle. This process entails transferring the ambulance box to a new chassis, which is expected to save over $200,000 compared to purchasing a new vehicle outright. The council emphasized their commitment to fiscal responsibility while ensuring adequate service coverage for residents.

Fire Marshal Carroll also reported on preparations for the upcoming Blues and Rib Fest scheduled for July. The council is proactively addressing past challenges related to code compliance and inspections for event tents to ensure a smooth and safe festival experience.
