Thompson School District promotes Valerie Lara Black and Sarah Rasmussen to leadership roles

The Thompson School District R-2J Board of Education held a regular meeting on June 18, 2025, where significant personnel changes and reflections on leadership were discussed. The meeting highlighted the appointment of Valerie Lara Black as the new Director of Human Resources and the removal of the interim title for Sarah Rasmussen, who will now serve as the Assistant Superintendent of Learning Services.

Valerie Lara Black, who has been the principal of Peak View Academy since January 2022, was officially recommended for her new role. Her extensive background includes nearly a decade as principal of Mary Blair Elementary School and various positions in educational leadership. Black holds a bachelor's degree in Spanish secondary education and is pursuing a doctoral degree in executive leadership for equity.

Sarah Rasmussen, who has been with the district since 2011, expressed her commitment to ensuring that every student receives the best educational experience possible. She has held multiple leadership roles within the district, including director of elementary education, and has over 27 years of experience in education.

The meeting also marked a farewell to Superintendent Mark Schaeffer, who will be leaving to assume a new position in suburban Chicago. Schaeffer reflected on his seven years with the district, emphasizing the importance of community partnerships and the dedication of the staff. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve in a district where he and his family have deep connections.
