Evanston residents seek clearer direction on housing reform in comprehensive plan

Roberts suggested that the plan should encourage housing types that fit within the existing neighborhood character, such as duplexes and small-scale residential structures.

Mary Rosinski echoed Roberts' sentiments, expressing concern over the simultaneous rollout of zoning changes and the comprehensive plan. She noted that many community members felt overwhelmed by the number of plans being discussed and stressed the importance of a strategic approach to housing development. Rosinski also raised the issue of affordable housing, particularly for seniors, advocating for solutions that would allow older residents to remain in their homes without facing increased property taxes due to renovations.

Sue Lohbock from Connections for the Homeless highlighted the need for the comprehensive plan to explicitly prioritize affordable housing. She pointed out that while increasing the diversity of housing stock is important, it should not overshadow the urgent need for affordable options. Lohbock called for language changes in the plan to ensure that affordable housing remains a clear priority for the city.
