Missoula celebrates fourth annual Juneteenth honoring Black Collective and Buffalo Soldiers

The recent government meeting in Missoula highlighted the upcoming Juneteenth Celebration at Fort Missoula, set for 2025, emphasizing the importance of community engagement and historical recognition. City officials and community leaders gathered to discuss the significance of this event, which has evolved from a Buffalo Soldiers gathering into a vital celebration of freedom and resilience.

Matt Lotzenhauser from the historic museum at Fort Missoula expressed pride in the collaboration with the Montana Black Collective, noting that their partnership has flourished over three years. He emphasized the need for institutions to demonstrate "institutional courage" in the face of challenges, urging attendees to continue supporting events that promote understanding and healing.

The meeting also featured a land acknowledgment by John Lund, pastor at University Congregational Church, recognizing the Salish and Kootenai peoples' historical connection to the land. This acknowledgment serves as a reminder of the ongoing impact of colonization and the commitment to fostering relationships with Indigenous communities.

Commissioner Josh Slodnick praised the resilience of the Missoula community, noting that unlike many celebrations across the country that have been curtailed due to fear, the Juneteenth event will proceed with full vigor. He reflected on the historical significance of Juneteenth, marking the day in 1865 when enslaved Americans in Texas were informed of their freedom, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
