Akron City Council approves $50,000 support for International Soapbox Derby programs

The City of Akron Council has reaffirmed its commitment to the International Soapbox Derby by approving a $50,000 annual contribution during the June 23, 2025, meeting. This funding, consistent with last year's support, aims to bolster the Derby's educational initiatives and community outreach programs.

Jill Colsar, chair of the International Soapbox Derby board, and interim executive director Dennis Van Fossen presented the Derby's ongoing efforts to engage local youth through STEM education and teamwork. Colsar highlighted the recent participation of 55 local schoolchildren in Derby activities, emphasizing the event's role in fostering community spirit and inclusivity, particularly for children with special needs through the "Super Kids" program.

Van Fossen, a former Soapbox Derby racer and world champion, shared his personal journey and the life skills he gained from the experience. He noted that the Derby not only promotes STEM learning but also instills values such as perseverance and teamwork, which are essential for personal development.

The upcoming All American Soapbox Derby, scheduled for July 19, is expected to draw significant attendance and generate an estimated $5 million in economic impact for Akron, alongside $6 million in media exposure. The council's approval of the funding is seen as a vital step in ensuring the success of this iconic event and its associated programs.

In addition to the Derby discussions, the council also addressed a separate ordinance authorizing the mayor to contract with Power Engineers Incorporated for a new phase of the city's special assessment system, indicating ongoing efforts to enhance city infrastructure and services.

The meeting underscored the importance of community events like the Soapbox Derby in fostering youth engagement and economic growth, with council members expressing strong support for the initiatives presented.
