Commission recommends approval for Cornerstone Point streetlight tax district proposal

The Bulloch County Planning & Zoning Commission has taken a significant step towards enhancing community safety by recommending the establishment of a streetlight special tax district for the Cornerstone Point subdivision. This decision, made during the meeting on June 17, 2025, aims to ensure that streetlights remain operational, providing essential safety and visibility for residents.

The proposed streetlight district will cover 79 lots located at the intersection of Clifton Road and Anderson Cemetery Road. The preliminary plans for Cornerstone Point were previously approved earlier this year, with the final plat secured under a performance bond on June 5, 2025. As construction progresses, the addition of streetlights is seen as a crucial element for the neighborhood, especially as homes are set to be built soon.

Commission members discussed the financial implications of the streetlight district, noting that costs would be incorporated into property tax bills rather than relying solely on homeowners' associations (HOAs) to cover expenses. This approach aims to ensure that the lights remain functional even if HOA management changes in the future.

The commission expressed confidence in the lighting plan proposed by the service provider, EMC, which is expected to address any dark spots in the area effectively. With no public hearing required for this new subdivision, the commission swiftly moved to recommend approval to the county commissioners, with a vote reflecting unanimous support.

As the commission prepares to present this recommendation at the upcoming county commissioner meeting on July 1, the establishment of the streetlight district marks a proactive measure to enhance safety and community standards in Bulloch County.
