Northeast Independent Living Program advocates share personal journeys at Paul Spooner Summit

During a recent Massachusetts Legislature meeting focused on the Status of Persons with Disabilities, community advocates shared powerful personal stories that highlighted the importance of support and employment for individuals with disabilities.

Sophie Corbic, a community advocate at the Northeast Independent Living Program (NILP), recounted her journey into advocacy. After attending the Paul Spooner Summit, she was approached by NILP's director, who recognized her potential and invited her to take on a community advocate role. Corbic emphasized the significance of having more advocates involved in supporting people with disabilities, showcasing how personal connections can lead to meaningful employment opportunities.

Maruti Cherka, a podcast host and advocate for the Tourette Association of America, shared how her advocacy began. Cherka expressed her desire to raise awareness for individuals with disabilities across various backgrounds. She described her experience as empowering, noting that her involvement in advocacy not only helped her feel included but also inspired her to assist others in similar situations.

Aweeji Benson, a youth fellow and master advocate for children, spoke about the support he received from job coaches and advocacy programs. He highlighted how these resources helped him recognize his potential and led him to a role where he advocates for children with disabilities. Benson's story underscored the importance of mentorship and belief in one's abilities.

The meeting also featured Vanessa Stewart, a family support coordinator, who began to share a story about one of her clients, further illustrating the real-world impact of advocacy and support services.
