Saint Mary's County launches new transit app and highlights community events

Residents of St. Mary's County are encouraged to take proactive measures to stay cool during the summer heat, as highlighted by Commissioner Ostro during the recent meeting on June 24, 2025. The commissioner urged community members to check on their neighbors, families, and pets, and to ensure their HVAC systems are running efficiently. He recommended replacing HVAC filters and programming timers to save on energy costs, especially given the rising electricity prices in Maryland.

In addition to addressing summer safety, the meeting celebrated the success of the recent Flag Day ceremony held on June 14. This year marked a unique indoor celebration, which was deemed necessary due to weather conditions, yet still included the traditional burning of old flags outside. The commissioner invited residents to participate in next year's ceremony, emphasizing its significance as one of the few such events in Maryland.

A notable development for local transportation was also announced: the launch of the St. Mary's Transit System app. This new tool, available for both Apple and Android devices, allows users to track bus locations and arrival times, enhancing accessibility for residents. The app is part of ongoing modernization efforts for the transit system, which have been a priority for both current and previous commissioners.

The meeting also acknowledged the participation of Leonardtown officials at the Maryland Municipal League conference, where they are expected to gain valuable insights to benefit the community.

Looking ahead, residents are invited to an informational meeting for the Christmas in April program on June 25 at the Fairgrounds. This initiative seeks volunteers to assist with various community projects, offering a chance for residents to contribute in meaningful ways.

Lastly, the 25th annual Potomac Jazz and Seafood Festival is set for July, promising a weekend filled with music and culinary delights. Community members are encouraged to mark their calendars for this popular event.
