Newport News School Board celebrates student achievements and future funding plans

In a heartfelt address at the Newport News City Council meeting on June 24, 2025, the chair of the school board expressed deep gratitude for the city's unwavering support of local education. Highlighting the successful collaboration between the council and Newport News Public Schools, the chair emphasized the importance of strong schools in fostering a thriving community.

The school board chair thanked the council for fully funding the budget for the 2025-2026 school year, which will allow for continued support of current initiatives and a 3% salary increase for employees. Notably, the starting salary for new teachers with a bachelor's degree will rise from $55,100 to $56,000. This financial backing is crucial as the school year closes, with over 1,600 students graduating and earning more than $85 million in scholarships.

The graduation rate stands impressively at 93%, surpassing the state average, with nearly half of the graduating class achieving honors. The chair also celebrated the recognition of five schools as exemplary, including Deer Park Elementary, which received the highest achievement award.
