Health department secures $12,800 grant for youth tobacco prevention programs

During the recent meeting of the Missoula County Public Schools (MCPS) Board of Trustees on June 24, 2025, significant discussions centered around health initiatives aimed at addressing substance use among students. The meeting featured presentations from Brooke Kreninger, the health services coordinator, and Leah Fitch Brody, the substance use disorder prevention coordinator from the health department.

The board reviewed a grant application for $12,800 from the Office of Public Instruction (OPI), which would support both elementary and high school efforts in substance use prevention. Kreninger reported that the previous year's initiatives had been successful, particularly the "In-Depth" program, which serves as an alternative to suspension for students caught using nicotine products. This program saw 24 students participate, while the "Not on Tobacco" cessation program had five participants. Both programs received positive feedback from students, staff, and parents, indicating a community endorsement for continued funding and support.

In addition to these programs, the board discussed plans to offer "Screenagers" screenings, which focus on the impact of technology and screen time on youth. Kreninger confirmed that at least one screening would take place at Sentinel High School in October, with the potential for additional screenings at other middle and high schools.

The board unanimously approved the tobacco use prevention grant application, reflecting a commitment to enhancing student health and well-being through targeted educational programs.

In a separate discussion, the meeting also touched on a recent gathering in Helena organized by the EP Promise Foundation, which focused on school finance. This event included a presentation by Dr. Marguerite Rosa from the Edgenomics Lab, emphasizing the importance of financial planning in education.
