Lincoln City Council approves amendment for new central library project funding

The Lincoln-Lancaster County Planning Commission meeting on June 25, 2025, highlighted significant developments regarding the Central Library project, a long-anticipated initiative aimed at enhancing community resources.

Planning staff member Andrew Theroff presented an amendment to the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) that has been in the works for several years. The amendment officially identifies the new location for the library at 11110 Street, also known as the Education Square Building. This clarity on location marks a pivotal step in the project’s progression.

The financial aspects of the project were also addressed. The total cost has been revised to $46.2 million, a reduction from the previously estimated $70 million. This funding will come from a combination of municipal improvement bonds, general revenues, and private contributions, reflecting a strategic shift in how the project will be financed.

Ryan Weber, the director of Lincoln City Libraries, provided additional context on the project’s evolution and future plans. He emphasized the importance of the new library in serving the community and acknowledged the thorough review conducted by the planning department.
