Littitz Rec Center leaders discuss community impact and expansion plans

The Lititz Borough Council convened on June 25, 2025, to discuss various community initiatives and updates, with a significant focus on the Lititz Rec Center's contributions and future plans. The meeting began with a presentation by Jerry, who introduced Karen Mellon, the executive director of the Rec Center, highlighting the longstanding partnership between the center and the borough.

Mellon emphasized the Rec Center's role as a vital community asset, noting that it operates as a charitable organization and is supported by both municipal contributions and community memberships. The borough provides the Rec Center with land at no cost and has committed $10,000 annually for its capital campaign, alongside a $32,500 pledge for facility improvements.

During her presentation, Mellon shared impressive membership statistics, revealing that the Rec Center serves over 9,500 members, with more than 4,200 being residents of Lititz Borough. She detailed the diverse programs offered, catering to various age groups, including youth sports, summer camps, and activities for older adults. Notably, the center has seen significant participation in its youth basketball program and summer camps, which collectively engage hundreds of local children.

Mellon also addressed the Rec Center's commitment to supporting the community, particularly its efforts to assist homeless students and families in need. Through its partnership campaign, the center raises approximately $100,000 annually to provide financial assistance for childcare, memberships, and other essential services, ensuring that no one is turned away.

In response to inquiries about potential expansions at the Rec Rock facility, Mellon expressed a desire to explore opportunities for growth, acknowledging the increasing demand for space and services. She highlighted the unique offerings at Rec Rock, including functional fitness and indoor bouldering, which are not readily available in the region.

The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of the borough's support for the Rec Center and its initiatives, underscoring the importance of community collaboration in enhancing local services and facilities. The council looks forward to continued partnership and development as they work together to enrich the lives of Lititz residents.
